The Santa Barbara Project

The appliances waiting to be installed

It all started in late May.

The Tenants

For eighteen years we rented our home to a lovely family. In May they informed us that they had purchased a home. We were blessed to have this family living in our home for so long.

Mike made an annual trip to check in on the property, and when all went well they signed another one-year lease.  We knew the home needed updating, but we could not remodel due to the renters’ occupancy. Purchasing a washer and dryer plus kitchen appliances was the best we could do. Much to our surprise, this family purchased a home five doors down the street.

This Old House

Our house was built in 1952, making it 73 years old. We specifically purchased this home because we had a distribution company in Santa Barbara. The purchase price was a little over $200,000 for the property.

Our son Mikos lived in the house while attending college. While he was living there, the house accidentally caught on fire. Three days after the fire, Santa Barbara experienced the worse rain storm in 50 years. With two different insurance claims we replaced most of  the windows and  a new roof. That was over twenty-five years ago. Now this house needs a complete remodel.

The Novice Crew

Together Mike and I had no clue about remodeling a home; however, we love watching DIY (Do It Yourself) home renovation programs and had an idea of what we wanted.

On our first trip to Santa Barbara we had an appointment with a vacation rental group. We thought this remodeling job would be over and done with in a few months. Our idea was to make it a vacation rental, but we quickly found out that the cost to do this would exceed our expenses.  For instance we would have to pay the city a 12% fee, and that did not include the 20% fee from the vacation rental group!

Brother George

My brother George is a contractor in Palm Desert. If he could he would have taken on this project, but logistically this was  impossible. He guided us through all these estimates, and we are so grateful for his input.

Contractor Number One

Later that morning we drove around our neighborhood and stopped to look at a remodel on Shoreline Drive. This street faces the Pacific Ocean. The owner of the home happened to be there and invited us in. This remodel was over a half million; our budget was nothing by comparison. Nevertheless, her contractor was gracious enough to come to our home and give us a preview of what our cost would entail. He walked around and gave us a number that was way out of our budget. The realization of the expense for a remodel in Santa Barbara was kicking in.

We did glean some great advice from this homeowner: we could save money by hiring a draftsperson rather than an architect.

We visited Santa Barbara’s County Clerk Office to look for our property’s original plans., but with over 500 computerized pages it was overwhelming.

Chava

Chava

Our guide was Chava, who knows the ins and outs of the city. As owners we had to sign documents for Chava to find the correct information. What a relief! Chava serves as the liaison between us and the city. She knows what permits need to be pulled in order to start the project.

Within a week Chava had the blueprints for the remodel. In the meantime we were still in search of a contractor.

The Contractors

Santa Barbara is a high-end community, so many of these contractors are accustomed to working on major projects. Our project cost pennies compared to a remodel in Montecito or Hope Ranch.

On another visit we met with a new contractor; he was braggadocios, telling us how he was living in Montecito but remodeling his home not far from us. His ideas were as big as his head, so when he left I wanted so badly to say,”Don’t let the door hit you in the ass.”

We had another appointment with a kind young man that we both took a liking to. He seemed to want the job, and he actually took the time to go over a plan. I remember driving home and feeling that finally we found someone we could trust.  We were instructed to purchase our appliances so that the job could start. Phase one was complete!

All was going in the right direction until the quote came in. It was way over our budget! One thing that was non-negotiable was the second bathroom. By the time we received the new estimate, we were told to go to some massive warehouse to pick out kitchen cabinets and windows, and we could forget about the second bathroom! I cried all the way home.

Father and Son

Mike was diligent and continued the hunt for a new contractor. When this father and son came in, I knew unequivocally that this job was too small for them. He immediately explained that we needed to hire a structural engineer. He lost us with those words; besides  every word that came out of his mouth was followed by an awkward laugh. No thank you! Bye, bye! Again I cried on the way home.

Contractor Number Four

It was mid-August and still we did not have a contractor.

It was well into the evening, and as I was sitting in my living room praying, I heard a light knock on the front door. Mike was already in bed. I walked up to the door and asked, “Who is it?”  “It’s your neighbor Chuck. Are you watering?” he asked. It turned out that we forgot to turn off the sprinklers on that side of the house, and it was flooding his yard. With a flashlight in hand, he helped me turn off the faucet.

Chuck looked at the appliances and asked, “What’s going on?” Though he was a stranger, I shared about the contractor dilemma. He quickly referred me to yet another contractor; I’ll call him Jim. Jim was different, he works on these homes, he added a second bathroom to Chuck’s home, and he lives in our neighborhood. Honestly, this man was an answer to our prayers.

Contractor Number Five

The following morning I could not wait to share the wonderful news. I wanted Mike to contact Jim as soon as possible. Mike texted him and he quickly replied. We met, he took our plans and we gave him the key to our house. I was praising God all the way home!  When he ended the text with a praying hands emoji, I was sure that this was a confirmation from God.

Labor Day Weekend

Mikos and Jenny were going to spend the weekend with us in Santa Barbara. I could not stop talking about Jim and could not wait for them to meet him.

When Jim arrived with the world’s smallest note pad, I knew we were in trouble. Why he did not have an estimate we will never know. His suggestions were outrageous! He wanted to remove all the walls to rewire, and he suggested that we needed a new roof. I looked at him and said, “The roof is not leaking.” He added, “Well, eventually it will be.” Under my breath I wanted to tell him that eventually Jesus will return! To say that we were disappointed is an understatement!

The Flooring Company

In the meantime Mike was talking to Kathy, who owns a flooring business, and her husband, who is a contractor. These conversations were taking place between the second and third contractors. Kathy explained to Mike that they never turn away a small remodel, and that we should give her a chance.

By this time I had given up all hope on the second bathroom,  but she captured our attention with her tenacity. She told Mike that the second bathroom was essential. Then she presented us with drawings of a lovely kitchen and main bath remodel plus the second bathroom in the plans. We have met with her over four times, and this last week we introduced her to Chava. Between the two of them the work will start soon.

Southern California Edison

Mike had contacted Edison about a new electrical box in July. After communicating with Edison, he was informed that the earliest they could accommodate our needs would be in late November.

Coastal Property

We are learning something new every step of the way. Coastal properties are in another category, so the permits are different,

Bouchon French Restaurant

The Long Walks

Above all we take long, daily walks, the most rewarding part of this project. We eat one main meal, either lunch or dinner; and on the day of our departure we have breakfast. We try to eat at a different restaurant each time. Bouchon, a French restaurant, has the best onion soup in the world.

My Prayer

Dear Lord, I know Your timing for this project is in Your hands. I continually pray for wisdom to trust in You. Thank You for the patience You have graciously bestowed on Mike and me, bringing us closer together as we go through this trial. Jesus, I trust in You! Amen.

Life In The Slow Lane

The only thing that is certain about my life is that I have peace, “a peace that surpasses all understanding.” (Philippians 4:4-7)

The Fall

I have had my health issues, some of which I brought on by my own doing, like when I broke my leg nine years ago. While I was coming down the stairs with a hand full of odds and ends, I noticed a sizable patch of cat puke on the wooden floor. Thinking that I had to clean up the vomit, I missed the last step and fell. Falling is never a graceful act, and the noise startled the housekeeper. Immediately a sharp pain went up my leg. I hobbled over to the couch and asked her to bring me a bag of ice.  But the pain was too intense; nothing was relieving the discomfort.

Mike To The Rescue

I called Mike, who helps me when I have traumas. I  cried like a baby while I explained what happened. He rushed home to help, then took me to Urgent Care. It was clear from the x-ray that my right leg was broken near the ankle. Leaving there, I wore the most unattractive black air cast and crutches. Then I made an appointment with an orthopedic specialist for the following morning.

The Orthopedic Appointment

The doctor told me that I could not drive for a month. I had to keep my foot elevated and to sleep in the ugly, bulky air cast. For the first week everything that spewed out of my mouth was a gasp, followed by a grunt and ending with a complaint. Once I got upstairs for the night, I stayed in my room. When morning came I stayed downstairs. This meant I could not attend daily Mass!

I had my son-in-law Russ bring one of the office chairs into the kitchen, so I could get around by rolling from one part of the kitchen to the other. I was on crutches and that was the worst part of the injury. Crutches were invented in a workshop in hell and I could never get over the discomfort of using them. On one of my follow-up visits I was told that the crutches were too high. No wonder my armpits screamed at every use, and I developed honest-to-goodness stomach muscles from the strain.

The Scooter

When I finally got the clearance to drive, I had to remove my boot in order to do so; this just added to the frustration due to getting ready for anything! By this time I had mastered patience. Even if I was in a rush, my pace was as slow as molasses. One day I had a great epiphany  that I should order a scooter for my rehabilitation. Amazon  to the rescue! Within a week an adorable blue scooter arrived just in time for a family outing.

We were all going to meet at Down Town Disney for a celebratory dinner for Russ. I had not broken in the scooter, but I was certain that it was going to be easy. Riding the scooter  around my family room it felt odd and uncomfortable.  I brushed it off without giving it another thought.

We arrived at the hotel the following day, and I was going to use the scooter. But Mike thought that we should take the complimentary shuttle instead, so we loaded up the scooter and headed out. Downtown Disney was where I broke in the scooter. We arrived at Fossil, the store that my daughter was managing at the time. I kept getting stuck in corners of the already cramped store, and was not getting the hang of the scooter.

The Death Trap

We left to go to dinner and suddenly it all came together.  The cool breeze from the movement of the scooter was making my hair softly flow back; I felt like a model for a shampoo commercial. I was filled with pride and confidence as people stared and watched me maneuver the new ride. Then it happened. Traveling a little too fast,  the scooter caught a slight lift on the sidewalk. From a distance I could hear Mike and Sonja yelling for me to slow down, but it was too late. I flipped over the handlebars of the killer scooter and landed flat on my face.

The voices of  foreigners screaming and saying things in other languages, and people gasping with great concern caught my ears. It took a legion of angels to flip my body around. I held out one hand and said, “I’m ok, I’m ok.” From that point a terror gripped my heart and the sweet scooter became a death trap.

I wanted my crutches back, but I had left them at home. In all humility I slowly rolled into the restaurant. Dinner was most unpleasant because I knew that I had to ride that thing back to the hotel. When it was time to leave, I mounted the beast and a massive cramp seized my injured leg. The drama that ensued was my grandkids fighting to take turns on the scooter. Mike and Mikos wanted no part in this, so they abandoned me. Russ had to push me the rest of the way while Jenny and Sonja laughed most of the way back.

James 1:2-4
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

The Doctor’s. Visit

At my next follow up-visit, the doctor was a completely insensitive jerk when asking me,”Who told you to get a scooter?” I did not order that for you!” Really? Now he’s asking that question! I wanted to remind him of the time that he made me wait four hours in his office to see him!  But I was not going to be rude like him. I did ask him for a handicap placard, and he agreed with only a one-month prescription. I loved that placard and was greatly disappointed when it expired.

The Recovery

It took three months to recover from this injury; each day brought me more freedom. This was a hidden spiritual journey, and I learned many things from this experience.  Patience really is a virtue, and it was a hard lesson for me. Healing broken bones takes time. Mike’s empathetic heart always takes over; so he stepped up to care for me. Having to depend on others to take me to doctor’s appointments and to run errands was humbling. I could no longer attend daily Mass. One time my son Mikos took me to church, a very special occasion for me.

I am more mindful of my age,  and I hold on to the rail while ascending and descending the stairs.

My Prayer

Dear Lord, watch over us in our golden years. Amen

Transitioning Of The World

The world is shifting towards God.

The night before Charlie Kirk was assassinated we were in Santa Barbara. We are currently planning a remodel, so we stay in our home; we have wifi but no television. So we go out for early dinners and go to bed. Unlike Mike, I like the quiet of the night and stay up late. I pray and then listen to Christian  podcasts, also I scroll through Instagram or TikTok. On this particular evening I was enjoying listening to Charlie Kirk.

Charlie Kirk

This young man had a calling and, despite the fact that he was taken too early, his legacy will continue. By now most of you know who Charlie Kirk was. He was all what he projected us Christians to be: he stood for God, family and country. Boldness is a gift, and this was Charlie Kirk’s biggest asset.

I first came upon his posts in 2019. He was with Candace Owens and together they took on the world. When they parted ways, I continued to follow Charlie Kirk.

The Purpose

When writing this Blog, I’m careful with my words. So many times I’m holding back what I really want to say for fear of backlash. This is my style, and my goal is always to win people over to Christ. Gaining followers is the last of my worries; putting out the Word of God is my first priority. In the same way, I have nothing to lose whether you agree with me or not. The truth will always be my guide.

Charlie Kirk vigil Seoul, South Korea

Everything Charlie Kirk spoke were words of truth unctioned  by the Holy Spirit. There is no better way to explain his forceful language, particularly when it came to subjects of abortion and transgender issues. He never held back because the truth was his guide.

Imagine going from one college campus to another and defending the unborn, putting confused students in their place by quoting Scripture. Only by being immersed in the Word of God can this be accomplished. He knew what he was up against, yet he continued his call. It never phased him that he was up against the Woke environment of universities because he was going to prove them wrong.

Gen Z

Who could better lead this phone- addicted, confused generation to set them straight? It’s happening! Gen Z has taken the reigns and they will make the difference. They will not fall to “every wind of doctrine” ( Ephesians 4:14) because they understand that they need to secure a future for themselves. They are going to place God first. Remember, this is the group who suffered it out during the lockdowns, they are the COVID generation. The unreasonable sacrifices they made changed them forever. Specifically, they learned what a hoax this all was after the truth was exposed.

We will sit back and watch this quiet movement take place. They will not riot, there are no hired riot leaders to disrupt their message. No mayhem will overtake them either because they, too, will be led by Christ.

Come Holy Spirit

Do you feel the change coming? There will be an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our country. Charlie Kirk’s martyrdom ignited this movement, and it will soon be worldwide. We’re not going to put up with this demonic ideology any longer. The Holy Spirit of God  is hovering over our land touching and transforming hardened hearts.  Soon their eyes will see the glory of God manifest around them, and the truth will lead them to the Foot of the Cross. Our cries are finally being answered, and I will be part of this new wave of leading others to Christ. There is great excitement in the air, and for once we can all breathe in the Holy Spirit!

My Commitment

This week will mark five years that I have volunteered at St. Norbert Parish by teaching First Holy Communion and Confirmation classes. Though I’ve turned the ripe old age of 73, God will give me the stamina to continue with these classes. Volunteering gives us a purpose, especially because we are molding the minds of the youth. According to Cleveland Clinic, volunteers live a longer life. Preparing for these classes requires studying and understanding the Bible. This keeps my mind alert and prepares me to evangelize.

Stephen

In many ways we can compare Charlie Kirk to Stephen, from Acts Chapters six and seven. People hated Stephen because he stood for God. His accusers were many, but that did not change Stephen’s message; it only made him bolder because he was filled with the Holy Spirit.

You can’t  win an argument  with someone who is filled with the Holy Spirit.
Stephen Before The Sanhedrin
The Sanhedrin were the final authority in matters of faith in Judaism in biblical times. They would do anything to stop the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They did not accept Him as the Messiah.

54 Now when they heard this, they were infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one mind. 58 When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.

My Prayer

Dear Lord, help us in this battle. Equip us with the full armor of God. Sharpen our spiritual swords and put Your words in our mouth. Strengthen us through Your Holy Word! Amen.
