In-N-Out, That Is Not All What A Hamburger Is About

In-N-Out with Cubby, Maddie, Lucas, Will flexing his huge muscles

I promised the kids that we would go to In-N-Out Hamburgers to eat if they helped with cleaning my house. Maddie was especially helpful because she wanted her friend Brittney to join us.

Will and I sat at a separate table and started talking about In-N-Out, and how they place Bible Scripture on their packaging. This built up a big curiosity that I was going to get answers to. I called the In-N-Out corporate Offices and spoke to Christy, Customer Service Supervisor.  Christy shared that Rich Synder, the former president of  In-N-Out, wanted to express his faith without imposing it on others. Christy emailed me the information on the twelve verses in all the  In-N-Out packaging. In-N-Out has been placing Bible verses for more than 20 years.

The Scripture on Will’s  chocolate shake  is from Proverbs 3:5, which reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your path straight.”  This powerful Scripture is witnessing to many as it is one of those Scriptures that does not need interpretation, providing simple guidelines for living a good life. Will also had fries, and on the fry boat was Proverbs 24:16, a Scripture which was recently introduced 2016, as follows “For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.” This message is profound and comes with a warning. The righteous will fall but with God’s help they will prevail, not the wicked, they will pay and repay for their misgivings. On Will’s hamburger bag was Rev 3;20, which reads,  “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” I determined that there was a special blessing on the food at In-N-Out, this verse being about Jesus standing at the door of our hearts, and lovingly waiting for us to respond. This same verse can also be found on the beach t-shirt located on the license plate of the Mustang. On the motorcycle t-shirt is Luke 10:27  (located on the trunk of the palm tree), And he answered , “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” This is what Jesus calls the two greatest commandments of the Old Testament, and is also part of Parable of the Good Samaritan.

The greatest discovery for me was that In-N-Out has Isaiah 53 on R-9 cups (used for water). Isaiah 53 is about the Passion of Christ.

From my visit to Qumran, actual cave of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls
Clay jars where the manuscripts were found

Isaiah 53 is a part of the Dead Sea Scrolls  which were discovered by a Beoduin shepherd boy in 1947 in Qumran, Israel. Of all these treasured Scriptures found in Qumran,  Isaiah  is most intact, and is 1,000 years older than any previously known copy of Isaiah. In fact, it is the oldest group of Old Testament manuscripts ever found!  To Christians there is nothing more indisputable than this part of the Old Testament because it solidifies the prophecy of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.

In 1993, a terrible plane crash claimed the lives of  In-N-Out President Rich Snyder and Vice-President Philip West. The private jet that they were in returning from a stop made in Fresno for the opening of a new restaurant. The plane was going to Bakersfield where the team of executives were scouting for new locations. The jet stopped in La Verne, CA, where Esther Snyder disembarked at Brackett Field. Esther Snyder and her Husband Harry were the founders of In-N-Out. The Matriarch was spared her life that day so that she could get her business in order. Esther Snyder must have done a lot of praying in preparing the only heir to the throne, Lynsi Snyder, to take over the reins.

In-N-Out is a privately held company with Lynsi Snyder the sole owner. She is the only grandchild of this empire and continues to operate the way that is was originally established. Why would you change perfection? With the patriarch and matriarch gone, The Lord has placed a hedge of protection around Lynsi Snyder and In-N-Out. Their success will continue because this organization put God first.

My grandchildren are finally back home, but not before we experienced a break in before they left. It was about 3:00 A.M. when I heard the noise. Mike was out of town and Will was spending the night with his cousins, so it was just Maddie and I. Maddie and I were sharing the same bed, we said our prayers and Maddie fell immediately into R.E.M. I was still praying the Rosary when I heard the first sound. We have two cats and I am familiar with their annoying sounds. This was not a cat. My prayers were accelerating as I tightened my grip on the Rosary. Then a loud bang. My heart was beating out of my chest and I could hear muffled sleep talk coming from Maddie. I grabbed the St. Benedict cross with my other hand and realized that I had to face an intruder. I was in the middle of a Hail Mary when the door flung open and intruder, my grandchildren ‘s  stupid dog Rosie jumped into bed with us! So frightened that I could not scream, I rounded Rosie up and secured the gate in the family room, and was finally falling asleep when the cat started meowing. It was Maxine, the 19 year old cat. This cat’s sound has changed to an eerie sound of a newborn baby in distress. I got up and locked her in the kitchen. With all the excitement I finally fell asleep at 5 A.M.

Waffle feet suffered at the soccer tournament

I suffered waffle foot burns from the soccer tournament and my nose was so red that it looked displaced on my face.

We finally have our home back but I miss my grandchildren, I never thought I say that!

Ten Days in China…Ten days with Grandma

Maddie 12, Cubby 5, Will 10, and Lucas 7

Train a child the way he should go, and when he is old he will he will not turn from it.  Proverbs 22:6

Two months ago, this talk started about China. Mikos and Jenny had been invited to visit Tsingtao Beer Brewery in Qingdao, China. This was a trip of a lifetime with all expenses paid, staying at five-star hotels, so how could I say no to watching Maddie and Will? In the meantime, another storm was brewing with Sonja and Russ planning a trip to Minnesota to celebrate Russ’s grandfather’s 90th birthday. These trips collided to form the perfect storm of babysitting. My grandchildren not only come with real luggage but they bring their dogs as well.

Our grandchildren are involved in way too many things. Maddie has play practice, Will has soccer practice, Maddie has soccer practice, Will has basketball practice, Lucas has soccer practice, Cubby has soccer practice, and all at different times, and thank God, different days.

Day One: I was looking for the brush to apply my eyeliner when Cubby came running into the bathroom, saying, “Father Leonard fell down! Father Leonard  fell down!” No sooner does Lucas come running in to contest all that Cubby said. Cubby was jumping up and down, his already big eyes getting bigger as he screamed again, “Father Leonard fell!” Lucas was yelling at the same time, wanting me to listen to what he had to say. In frustration to calm Cubby down, Lucas slapped him across the face and called him a liar. I wanted to laugh but I was confused. Father Leonard is a priest and dear friend of mine; what were these kids talking about? I told them both to calm down and one at a time, to tell me what happened. Again the screaming over each other started. I got up and said “Show me!” They ran ahead of me and opened the French doors to the back yard; there on the ground was our fountain, the statue of St. Francis of Assisi not Father Leonard, with all of the guilty kids pointing fingers at each other. There were no sibling alliances; it was every man for himself.  Just like the authors of the four Gospels, the kids all had their own version as to what happened. Only God knows the truth, and on judgement day the truth will be revealed, with God determining the guilty party. I thanked God no one was injured.

The resilient St. Francis

St. Francis suffered a blow to the head, leaving parts of his cerebellum in the shrubs.

This fountain weighs about 300 pounds, and Maddie and I had to put it together before Papa got home. This was difficult job because we had to connect the tubes for the water.  Lucas helped with the tubes while Will and Cubby nervously watched. With a lot of heave-hos, we did it! Once St. Francis was up and running, we noticed more damage, so I made those rug rats look for the parts that were missing.

Maddie price checking
Purchasing the school supplies

Hours passed and we had a project to complete. St. Norbert Parish’s, filling  backpacks was under way. I picked up two backpacks for us to fill. Maddie spearheaded the project by checking and comparing prices for school supplies, and found that Target had the best prices. We loaded up the SUV while Maddie separated the items to be purchased into two groups. Will and Lucas were team one and Maddie and Jacob team two. It did not take long before Will and Lucas started acting up and running around like wild boars. After a few threats, they sorta of calmed down. A woman and her daughter looked at us like we had the plague, Maddie overheard them say, “Here they come, let’s go another direction.” I so much wanted to explain that these kids were not my children, but they disappeared from my view.

We got home and completed the loving project. Lucas came to me later and asked, “Grandma, who’s going to pay us back for all the stuff we bought?” I reminded Lucas that we did this for Jesus and that He always pays us back in different ways. I told Lucas that a sweet lady, Doris from our  ministry blessed me with a generous amount of birthday money, and we used that blessing to fill the backpacks.

We waited several days to tell Papa about the fountain, as the kids  were terrified to face Mike. I can’t blame them, because  Mike gets upset about half-full bottles of water all over the house and is always yelling, “Is anyone watching those kids?” It is never a good time to break bad news but I had to tell Mike. He was his usual self, at first a little angry, then he thanked me for telling him.

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.” Proverbs 20:11

Mikos and Moses

Mikos in his dapper days
Moses

Mike purchased a sporty two-door green Acura for me in the 1989. This was my favorite car and though I never get attached to inanimate objects, this car was different because before, I was driving an atrocious turquoise van. We name all of our cars and the Acura Legend’s name was Moses.

Mikos (son) was invited to Colorado to visit some dear friends; the day he was leaving he slept in. I yelled for him to get up, and looked at his ticket to discover that his flight was scheduled to leave in five minutes. We live 15  minutes from John Wayne Airport and that is without traffic. I made Mikos get up and get ready. We both needed a break from each other and I was not going to miss this opportunity. John Wayne Airport was much smaller then, and parking was right in front.  Mikos did not want to drag his suitcase just in case he missed the flight. When we got to the counter, we were informed that the flight had mechanical problems and that it had been delayed.  I gave him the keys to Moses for him to get the luggage. Just then the announcement was made that the plane was ready for takeoff. I was feeling a little guilty because of the mechanical problem, so I went upstairs  to balcony to see my son off. I could see that he was at a window seat and he was waving to me, but the wave seemed more and more  animated and then I saw my car keys in his hand. It took over 3 hours to get this resolved. I called the office and was told that Mike was on his way to L.A. He had to be paged (remember those beepers). Mike had to drive home and pick up the spare key and bring it to the airport.

Another incident with Moses happened late September that same year. I had just gone grocery shopping, and as I pulled up, Mikos offered to help carry the bags in.  This was so out of character for my son because he never before offered any assistance.  Maybe he was changing or maturing. Nope! He was trying to impress his girlfriend, who was visiting that day. “Don’t worry Mom, I’ll put everything away too, ” he said.  A few hours had passed when I went into the kitchen and discovered that Mikos neglected to put the ice cream in the freezer, it was completely melted.

Days passed and Moses and I were driving to and from work. That September we were experiencing a particularly hot Indian summer. Moses the car started to develop a strange stench.  After about a week the smell became more caustic, and when I would get in the car I wanted to throw up. I searched throughly for any leftover food but found nothing. I put the air conditioner full blast and drove to work. I knew it was serious when I came to a stop signal and people would look at me in disgust. I looked back, shrugged my  shoulders at them and said, “What?” At that point the smell was so putrid that I no longer smelled it. I had no idea that the smell was latching on to my clothing either. When I got to work one of the supervisors coughed a throw up sounding croup when I passed by. Waving his hand in front of his disgusted-looking face, he blurted out, “What is that horrible smell?” I had become immune to the sulfurous foul air but I knew something was not right. I went into my office and did what every normal person does, lifting my arm smelling both armpits, but it all registered normal.

When I got home, Sonja was outside with her boyfriend. I opened the door and they both looked like they smelled death. I put my head down, raised my hands in question and told them that I did not know what was wrong but that everyone was telling me that about polluted smell.  “Is there something dead in your car?” Sonja asked.  It never dawned on me to look in the trunk and this frightened me because whatever it was, it has definitely gone to meet its maker. We brought in the trash containers from the back yard to facilitate the transfer of the dead foreign matter.  Sonja’s boyfriend opened the trunk and there it was, the rotting raw chicken that Mikos failed to bring into the house! My eyes cried for what my nose was enduring. The three of us choked and gasped for any clean air to free us of this foul fowl.

It took weeks before  everything got back to normal. This task fell on none other than Mike. After several carwashes, air freshener, leaving the windows down he finally decided that it was inhabitable and safe for driving. Anyone that knows my husband Mike understands how meticulous  he is about a clean car.

As the years passed  and Mikos was leaving for college in Santa Barbara, we handed down Moses to him.  As my son was leaving, a Bible Scripture came to me from Matthew 7:6 “Do not give that which is holy to dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine.” I knew that was it over for Moses and it was going to be downhill from there; the car would never be kept clean as Mike kept it.
